Cristian Romero sends Tottenham message after disappointing West Ham display

Cristian Romero has reassured Tottenham Hotspur supporters about the club's progress

Cristian Romero marked his comeback from a three-match suspension with a goal in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham, and has issued a message to fans after the disappointing result

Cristian Romero has told Tottenham Hotspur supporters the club is moving in the right direction despite their recent poor run of form.

West Ham United stunned Spurs on Wednesday night, coming from behind to snatch a 2-1 victory in North London. A smash-and-grab performance saw the Hammers, who managed just 25% possession, shock Tottenham, inflicting their fourth defeat in five games.

Spurs have not won a game since the end of October – seriously denting hopes of a potential title charge following their stunning start to the campaign. A mixture of injuries and suspensions in recent weeks has undoubtedly halted Ange Postecoglou’s solid start as manager.

Romero – who bagged the 11th-minute opener against West Ham – returned following a three-match suspension. The Argentine was sent off in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea last month and, his absence, combined with Micky van de Ven’s injury, has helped contribute to the downturn in results.

Conceding 15 goals in their last six games is hardly sustainable if Tottenham are to reignite their once-promising season. Van de Ven is not expected to return until the new year – placing the onus on Romero to step up over the festive period.

Despite the concerning run, the 25-year-old has insisted Spurs are on the right path under Postecoglou. Beating Newcastle United is imperative if Postecoglou’s side are to stay within touch of the top-four pack.

“Correct, learn and continue,” Romero told his social media followers. “There is no doubt that a family with ambitions is finally being built but everything takes time. Thank you for your support (as) always fans. All together, always.”
